Diokleia

Diokleia
Originally the name referred to a fortress in Illyricum (q.v.) destroyed by the Avars (q.v.) in the seventh century. Subsequently the name came to refer to the region along the Adriatic coast from Dyrrachion (qq.v.) to Kotor in the north, coinciding with modern Montenegro. In the 10th century a Slavic (q.v.) principality arose, comprised chiefly of Serbs (q.v.). It was conquered by Samuel of Bulgaria (q.v.) in 997, but with the conquest of Bulgaria (q.v.) in 1018 it became a dependency of Byzantium (q.v.). After the 10th century it was called Zeta (q.v.).
